The birth of John the Baptist was a miracle. Elizabeth, his mother, was "barren and stricken with years." She gave up any hope of having children long before an angel came to her and told her she would bare a son. Elizabeth and Mary, Christ's mortal mother, were cousins. John the Baptist and Christ were born around the same time, and they were very close friends because of their mothers' relationship. Zacharias was struck dumb by an angel because he didn't believe that God could make his wife able to bare children. Zacharias rejoiced when John was born because he was able to speak.
